Hiking to resettled communities

Hiking to the resettled communities of Kerley's Harbour and British Harbour are two minutes from the front door. Resettlement was a controversial program brought to the province by the Federal Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. These rugged and isolated communites were abandoned, sometimes forced, by their residents throughout the 1960's and 1970's with the promise of a better life by both governments.  It is still a program that's merits are argued to this day.  Imagine what life was like in these two communities with no electricity, schools, or health services as recent as 1963. Now home to a hand full of cottages these communities and many others like them were the lifeblood of Newfoundland and Labrador.
